Obtaining a tax identification number in Turkey

A tax identification number (Vergi Numarası) is one of the first and most important documents for foreigners in Turkey. It is required for most legal and financial transactions and plays a key role when purchasing real estate and planning a future life in the country.

Why do you need a tax number?

A tax number is required for:

  • purchase and registration of real estate;
  • opening a bank account;
  • registration of a residence permit;
  • connection of utilities (water, electricity, internet);
  • purchasing a car and registering it;
  • conclusion of official agreements;

How to get a tax number

The procedure is simple and doesn't take much time. There are two ways to obtain a tax identification number:

  1. Online
    Foreigners can apply for a tax identification number through the official website of the Turkish Tax Service. It's convenient, fast, and doesn't require a personal visit.
  2. In person at the tax office
    You need to contact any tax office (Vergi Dairesi) at your place of residence.

Required documents

To obtain a tax number you will need:

  • foreign passport;
  • notarized translation of passport (upon request);
  • residential address (it is sufficient to indicate the actual address of residence).

Terms and features

  • tax number is issued free of charge;
  • usually completed within one day;
  • It has no expiration date - you get it once and use it for life;
  • You can restore a lost number at any time.
